NEW SMILE

Passing by the mirror,
I am startled.
A change has taken place
in the strangely familiar face.
The change has happened to me
seemingly overnight....
A strange contortion of the muscles
and tendons surrounding my mouth.
People look and stare quizzically
and I sense they too
have noticed this odd change.
"What is it?" I ask a friend
and they tell me with a grin
"You are smiling
and look happy.
You must be getting some."
And my contortions increase
enormously.
"No," I say. "Much better than that,
by far."
