Prickly Pear Cactus

Prickly Pear Cactus

A close up of the toothmarks left by the puppy last year.

What looks to be the stem of the flower is actually the new growth of fruit that won't be ripe until summer. Those green stems will turn bright purple and will be filled with pulp and juice that many use to make jelly. These stay green all year. They are also very pretty when they are covered with snow.
