OLD MAN
(© Marion Stewart - 12/8/95)

Lord, what a beautiful morning.
Everyone is gone.
They did not remember
I had a birthday.
I dressed in my clean overalls,
then I shaved.
I placed my chair on the car porch.
I was excited,
but I sat alone
hoping I could see someone,
because this was my birthday.
I am 88 years old.
My children are married and gone,
but not far away.
I am hoping they will remember
and come by today.
I am afraid to take a nap.
Something might go wrong.
So, I will just wait.
Someone could come along,
but evening has come.
So, I will wait a little longer.
There's someone I want to see.
If company comes,
just wake me up.
