Those Crafty Things - Cattails and Birds Nest

I started with a blue earthenware pot and added foam as a base with dried moss on top. The flowers are a mixture of silk earthtone florals and blue babies breath. Those are real cattails. I used a braided straw nest with a mushroom baby bird and egg. I added tiny blue silk butterflies.

Cattails and Bird's Nest

You can gather your own naturals (cattails, pinecones, seeds, nuts, lichen, moss, etc.). They need to be washed thoroughly and then allowed to air dry. After they are dry, they need to be baked at very low temperatures to kill any seeds or insects that may still live inside. Cattails seeds are especially bad for bursting through a perfect arrangement if you do not take care to bake them properly.

Dessicant works best to dry flowers and retain their natural color and shape. Baking flowers can cause them to lose shape and color. The color of many dried flowers deepens with drying. This is natural and adds to the beauty of dried arrangements.

A coat of clear spray acrylic or preservant helps keep your naturals beautiful for a very long time.
