What is the purpose of this site?

This site started out as my homesite. I built it to display some of my favorite things, poetry, art, my family. Over time it has grown into much more. The main purpose is still there for me. I have just added more of the things I enjoy. I have also tried to use the site as a medium to show off my own work. I enjoy writing and creation. The internet is the perfect medium for expressing that. You won't find anything on my site that isn't there for me to enjoy as much as (hopefully) my visitors will. It is also an avenue for my personal viewpoints. I seem to have plenty of those. The main viewpoint I like to make is this... Every homesite should be a mirror image of the person building it. That does not mean you need photos of yourself splashed across every page. It means the site should express who you are. Each of us have different forms of expression. Using your own unique form of expression is what makes a homesite come alive with a personality and life that can be your fingerprint on the web.

Why do some pages take so long to download?

Many of my pages are graphics intense. That means they have a lot of graphics/images. I also use this website as my personal portfolio of work. While I try to save my users download times, it is not always possible to do that and still get the best a graphic has to offer. I choose to show quality graphics as well as quality content. Sometimes that means a page may take longer to download than others.

What settings work best on this site?

So far, I build the site using 32 bit true color and a resolution of 1024x768 or 800x600. I do test pages at different settings, especially if a user says they have problems viewing it. 24 bit true color will still give a good view of all graphics. At 16 bit true color I noted occasional distortion. Less than 16 bit true color looked pretty dreadful. I use size 10 Arial fonts as my default setting.

Do settings really matter?

Yes, definitely. I do try to make the sites design look OK at other settings. However, to get the maximum enjoyment from a site, it is necessary to know what settings were used to optimize it. Less than "high color" or "true color" will not give the same experience when viewing a site that was optimized for high color or true color. Using a lower or higher resolution can make fonts and tables appear out of place.

Does it matter which browser I use?

I designed the site using IE 5.5. Other browsers do give a slightly different view of some of the pages. Some are changed drastically. I try to make them look good despite those changes. I optimize for IE 5.5, using commands that can't be seen in Netscape. This usually does not make a difference in overall appearance of the page. It simply adds color depth to tables and frames or other similar commands without changing the overall structure of the page design. I also have several instances of tags where I had to input a separate command for each browser type. The only browsers I have worked with are Netscape and IE. Several types of tags (example... sound files) need a different command to work in each browser. While older browsers will not give you frames or Java scripting as the newer browsers do, I have tried to keep the difference for those browsers to a minimum as well. To get the true feel of this site, you need IE 5+. To enjoy this site, I hope any browser will work. If you experience a problem because of your particular browsers capabilities, please let me know.

For those without the ability to use Java Applets or with Java turned off, I have added a Text Only Menu.

May I use the pictures, graphics or writing I find on your site?

There are many graphics on this site that I have made for others to use. All I ask in return is a small text link on the page where the graphic is used that links to my site www.nem5.com stating where the graphic was obtained. Only graphics in the Nem5 Graphics section of this site may be used. I do not give up rights to these images, I simply allow their use in return for a link to this site. All other graphics are my work or the work of others and have been copyrighted with exclusive rights withheld. No one has permission from me or any other artist represented on this site to use their work and claim it is your own. Images that were made by others will have a notation stating the name and URL (if applicable) of the original artist on the page where the image resides.

Literary works (writing) on this site are the intellectual property of the author. Nem5 websites have been granted use of the writings still held under strict copyright laws. Classic poetry has been added where the original author is noted. These works have been deemed public property. If you wish to use any of the writing on this site, please contact me and I will give you information on obtaining permission to use them. No original writing on this site may be used without express written permission by the author of each particular work. If the author is anonymous (the work will say "author anonymous" or "by a friend"), permission will be denied. I have used these works on the condition that the author remain anonymous and the work will be used exclusively on Nem5 websites.

Will you tell me how to make my own graphics?

While I do offer free help with graphics and HTML, I do not normally give step by step instructions on making particular graphic representations or styles. I will freely answer any and all questions concerning programs used to make any particular graphic. I will tell the source of the work, (example... it came from a photo I took in...). The best way to learn to make good graphics is practice. Find the programs you are most comfortable with and practice, practice, practice. I have answered some of the more frequently asked questions on programming and graphic representation, as well as adding a software review in my Help Forum. I have added tutorials that may help learn to make graphics or do HTML at Nem5 Awards Program Tutorials.

How can I win Nem5 Awards?

By going to the Nem5 Awards Program site and reading the criteria and filling out the form. There is an eligibility test on the "Apply" page that will help you determine whether your site is eligible for an award.

Will you really help me for free?

Yes, within reason. I will not build your site for you. I will not make your graphics for you. I will tell you which programs I have found do what you are trying to do best. I will answer questions placed in my forum or have someone who knows the answer better than I answer it for you. I will make every effort to make sure you get your question/s answered. I hope this helps. *smile* (I couldn't resist.)

Who/what is Nem5?

I am unsure why I get that question so often. It is short for Nemesis5. My students call me Nemiwan. Many of my friends, even real life friends, call me Nem. I have always loved Greek mythology. Nemesis simply happens to be my favorite goddess. I like her attitude and the air of mystery about her. So... I am Nem5. My business is also Nem5. I have registered it with Dunne & Bradstreet. Is this a big deal? Only to those who care about that sort of thing. Why the 5? It's my favorite number.

Nem5 is me. I am Maggi Norris. Nice to meet you. Welcome to my site and my world.
